Prompt#18: It’s Post Your Poems Day!

September 8, 2010

Need to Know Basis

Was this prompt deceptively simple or challenging for you? Was it easy or not to state three important attributes of yourself? And what about that “other” person or persons or group? Stick to basics or perhaps sought a playful response? The most simple questions can sometimes be the most difficult to address. Don’t even have a poem yet? Perhaps read a few of other’s work, be inspired. There’s still plenty of time to discover a poem for yourself!

Leave the links to your poems in the comments of this post, then go visit your fellow writers’ sites and read their work. Remember to leave only positive comments in the spirit of sharing and not critiquing. We look forward to reading your poems!

I’ve missed you all. Didn’t truly write to prompt, but this little prose bit is related conceptually:

    Convocation Bingo

Paul, if that’s not writing to prompt, then carry on doing it: a fantastic post: what an interesting life you are having. I echo whoever it was who suggested you write your memoirs – they’d knock Tony Blair’s off the top spot (thank goodness).

Wonderful Paul. Viv is perfectly correct! And thanks so much.

I hemmed then hawed, stalled some more, threw the first away, then wrote this tonight. A sort of conversation mixed of the two lists.

    Thimble and needle

Hrmph, I can no longer thread a needle easily. I am not Jack and I am not nimble.

      • September 9, 2010 10:37 am

I might disagree. Besides, I’m the thimble, not the needle myself.

This was a difficult prompt. What I came up with was:

There is such kindness in your statement of mortality and observation that we move beyond ego’s ambition and gather humility. Admire how much wisely shared in two brief stanzas.

I managed a short prose piece too:

Hello Yorkshireman, do you have a tremendous yearning to be young again?

      • September 9, 2010 4:31 am

Oh no, Irene. Couldn’t do it all again!

        Me neither! 🙂

Tersely stated. Like the commence with disarming physical details but the speaker warning there is a potential to be bitten, and the cautionary note to listener to be diplomatically charitable. There is, for me, an intriguing irony.

      • September 9, 2010 11:30 am

You are quite safe, the only thing to be bitten is my tongue! But I rely on a charitable nature!

Hello wonderful peeps. I haven’t written anything. Get cracking (me).

    • September 8, 2010 6:12 am

I have faith in you, Irene…You have too much to offer to ever silence yourself, I would hope,

      Elizabeth

You just wrote items one and two.
      I sense a poem

    • September 9, 2010 11:27 am

Statement of the posture reminded me of blowhards have encountered, the waking of the bear in the den whose posturing is intimidating until your apt observation that the pompousness is not real in threat – just boring. The phrase ‘abrasions on the soul’ really stung for reminded of how verbal violence can deeply harm.

I don’t know what I did. It simply wrote itself:

This is as you state, poetry emerging from nowhere and asking for a voice. Although the speaker of this poem insists it is ‘not about me’ so much information about attitude, behaviour is conveyed with deft selection of words, images. Breath-taking final line.

Almost scrapped it, but decided I was too lazy to start over

    What You Need To Know

Not really satisfied with mine. Oh well. A Few Too Many

  10. September 8, 2010 7:14 am

Oh dear, slapped wrist, Viv. I put my link in the wrong place:

    Thee and Me

and now I’m off to read all your lovely poetry.

    • September 8, 2010 7:38 am

Thanks Viv for re-linking your poem over here. What you shared and wrote is just too good to be missed!

Thanks to both your faith Elizabeth and Barbara, I stayed up late and wrote something prompty. It’s a work day tomorrow but I’ll visit soon enough.
