prompt 175 Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

September 19, 2013

“One moment the world is as it is. The next, it is something entirely different. Something it has never been before.” – Anne Rice

Last week, your character thrown into the alternate universe of your choosing met someone from what universe. Consider the above quote from Anne Rice’s novel Pandora. Now this week, your character and that someone are going to have a shared experience – and through that shared experience your character’s perception, either of the other person or of the place in which he/she/it/they have been dropped, will change.

What do I mean by a shared experience? It could be anything. Might your characters go to dinner together? Might they witness a historical event? Might they attend a concert, a play, or a ceremonial dance? Might their lives be threatened by an invasion, a bombing raid, a natural disaster? These are just some ideas, but you get the point.

And what sort of change might take place? It’s up to you to decide what changes – and how. Might the person your character met do something unexpected that causes your character’s perception to change? To use an example from last week’s prompt: how might Sherlock Holmes’ perception of Miss Marple change if she were exhibit horrible table manners during dinner? Or, how would the perception of the twelfth century Brahmin change if he were to witness the twentieth century Catholic priest pick up a gun to defend himself? Or, might something unexpected happen in the environment – for example, what would our first century Galilean think if all major systems aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise were to suddenly fail? And how subtly – or radically – might your character’s perception change?

As I’ve said before, the sky’s the limit. We’re nearing the end of this four-prompt series, so be prepared for something even more interesting next week. Happy poeming!

I missed the beginning of this series, and have written nothing worth shouting about lately, so I look forward to new prompts!
