Thursday Prompt #4: Doors

May 27, 2010

"blue door" by Mallery Koons

This week’s prompt comes from Wayne Pitchko, who asks us to go through some doors. Wayne says:

“Think about doors and write about a door that has some significance to you. Is there a door in your life that alters your perception when you walk through it? Is there a door that you tend to neglect? What do doors mean for you? Maybe you will discover a deeper understanding of doors. Have fun and let your imagination take you inside or outside the door.”

Let your imagination run wild with this one, and see where the door takes you. You may find yourself writing about physical doors and the act of walking across a threshold into a new place, or you may end up writing more abstractly about doors as opportunities or phases in your life. Let your mind linger on doors for a few days, then start writing and see what comes out the door…

See you next Wednesday at the “Post Your Poems” post to share what we’ve written!

Love this. I attempted to write a “non-sentient” poem about a door last… was it during April? No, it was during the Spa created through one of the Mini-Challenges of RWP. It didn’t work, I kept getting comments about the spiritual nature of my poem. I banged my head on the wall, “It is about a door!” so to see this post delights me. I can revisit it! (The door, I mean.)

A door is when you enter from the outside to the inside. Or step from the inside to the outside. Either ways a door is never simply a door. It’s a threshold. Thanks for such an interesting prompt Wayne!

I have seen old doors made into tables. In that case the door was neither a way in or out…

Interesting, Mallery. In that case the door has changed its function and identity. It is no longer a door but a table. Which also suggests that doors can be transforming.

Is there a place where we should link? If not, that’s fine. Just checking.

    Thanks for the prompt!

      Hi Carina,

On Wednesday I’ll do a new post called “It’s Post Your Poems Day!” and that is where you should leave your link to your poems.

      Thanks,
      Mallery

Sorry! While perusing everyone’s comments, I was surprised to see my link listed here. I didn’t mean to post my poem quite yet…somehow it ended up magically posting by itself when I put your link at the bottom of it on my blog. How did that happen?! I guess I need to not do that in the future.

    Again, so sorry. 😦

Dina, It’s okay. It’s called a pingback, which means when someone links to this page, it lets us know. It’s a good thing, not bad! You can continue to link to us in your posts.
